Tenant Rental Budget Calculator

Rent & utilitiesMonthly money leftMove-in costs

See how a rental fits your income and everyday expenses, then estimate the money you may need before moving in.

A budget estimate, not an application decision. Results use the amounts you enter. They do not determine eligibility, guarantee approval, or replace the landlord’s screening criteria or lease. Entries stay in this page and are not submitted or saved by the calculator.

1

Income & rent

Use either your personal budget or your household budget consistently throughout this calculator.

Income after taxes and deductions. Convert weekly pay × 52 ÷ 12 or biweekly pay × 26 ÷ 12.
Use the rent you are considering, or your share if splitting costs.
2

Other monthly housing costs

Enter your monthly share. Use 0 for items included in rent or costs that do not apply.

Electricity, gas, water, sewer, and trash that you pay.
Enter the monthly cost, or an annual premium divided by 12.
3

Living expenses & savings

Car payment, fuel, transit, and car insurance.
Avoid counting a car payment twice.
Phone, childcare, medical costs, subscriptions, and other regular spending.
4

One-time move-in costs

These costs are shown separately from your recurring monthly budget.

Include refundable pet or utility deposits if applicable.
Nonrefundable pet fees, setup fees, or other upfront charges. Exclude items above.

The first month is an upfront timing item, not an extra month of rent. Actual move-in charges, prorated rent, and when deposits are due depend on the lease. Refundable deposits still require cash upfront.

Plan for more than the rent.

Check the lease

Confirm which utilities, parking, pet fees, lawn care, and snow removal you pay for. Enter only your share and avoid counting costs included in rent twice.

Keep your savings in view

Enter the monthly savings amount you want to protect. The calculator subtracts it before showing what remains, so it stays part of your budget.

Prepare for move-in day

Ask for a written breakdown of deposits and fees. Verify the first payment, any prorated rent, and the date each amount is due.
